Tequila – a symbol of Mexico with a unique taste and rich tradition
Tequila is a distillate made from blue agave, a plant typical mainly of the region around the city of Tequila in the state of Jalisco. It belongs to the most famous Mexican drinks and its history goes back hundreds of years. The culture of tequila production is so important that the area of agave fields as well as traditional methods have been included in the UNESCO list.
The basis of quality tequila is the blue agave, the heart of which - the so-called piña - is slowly roasted to release the sweet juices. These are then fermented and distilled twice. The result is a clean, aromatic distillate with a typical herbal and sweet-spicy taste. Tequila is divided into several categories according to the method of aging:
- Blanco – a clear, unaged tequila with a pure expression of agave
- Reposado - aged 2-12 months in oak barrels
- Añejo – mature, aromatic tequila aged for at least one year
- Extra Añejo – luxury category with more than three years of aging
Today, tequila is drunk both neat and as the basis of many famous cocktails, such as the Margarita or the Paloma. Its unique taste, traditional production and connection with Mexican culture make it one of the most respected spirits in the world.
