Tomatin 12 Year Old is a highly respected whisky in the portfolio of the Scottish distillery Tomatin, located in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, near the city of Inverness. It is one of the few Scottish distilleries that boasts its own community housing for employees, the so-called "Tomatin village". This reflects their philosophy built on tradition, quality and a relationship with the community. This distillery has a rich history dating back to 1897 and was at one time the largest producer of single malt whisky in Scotland. Today, it is profiled as a producer of quality and affordable whisky with a subtle character.
This whisky is matured in a combination of American oak bourbon casks, sherry casks (especially Oloroso) and sometimes refill whisky casks. This combination gives it complexity without being too heavy. It is a whisky with an aroma of sweet barley, honey, vanilla, light notes of fresh apple, pear and citrus, fine spices and a hint of dried fruit. It tastes of ripe fruit (apple, peach), vanilla, caramel, a little honey, woody notes with a hint of nuts and sherry.
It is a whisky that will appeal to beginners and advanced drinkers alike. It is not extremely complex, but its simplicity is beautiful – accessible, round and harmonious. Great on its own or with a drop of water, or as an elegant digestif.
