Balvenie 12 YO DoubleWood is one of the most famous whiskeys from The Balvenie distillery, located in the heart of Scotland's Speyside region. This whiskey has gained worldwide respect thanks to its exceptionally balanced taste, traditional production process and unique maturation in two types of casks. For lovers of fine, round and harmonious single malt whisky, it represents a true foundation of the collection.
Balvenie Distillery was founded in 1892 by William Grant, a prominent figure in the Scottish whiskey industry. Grant sought to create a distillery that would build on traditional craftsmanship with an emphasis on manual work and self-control of the entire production process. Balvenie is still unique today in that it has preserved several completely traditional procedures – for example, its own malting floor (floor malting), a team of blacksmiths taking care of the copper boilers and a team of coopers taking care of the barrels. Thanks to these procedures, Balvenie is one of the few distilleries that, even in modern times, maintains an almost complete production cycle under one roof. This is reflected in its characteristic taste – delicate but distinctive, with perfectly harmonized notes of wood, fruit and spices.
Balvenie 12 YO DoubleWood gets its name from the double aging process. First, the whiskey is aged for approximately 12 years in American bourbon oak casks. These impart a gentle sweetness, notes of honey, vanilla and light oak spices to the distillate. Subsequently, the whiskey is pumped into Spanish Oloroso sherry casks. These give the distillate a deeper body, notes of dried fruit, nuts and subtle spiciness. Transfer to the second barrel (so-called wood finishing) is one of the methods that Balvenie has helped make famous all over the world.
