Brand A.H. Riise has its roots in the person of Albert Heinrich Riise, a Danish pharmacist working on the island of St. Thomas in the former Danish West Indies. According to the brand, Royal Danish Navy rum is based on a "Royal Navy" recipe, which referred to the period practice of supplying rum to naval units docked at Charlotte Amalie Harbor. The name "Royal Danish Navy" thus evokes the historical links between rum production and naval service - at a time when naval crews received rum as part of the provisions on board.
This is a molasses rum (as opposed to "agricole" styles), which means the raw material is molasses. Rum is distilled using the traditional "pot-still" method (pot still) at approx. 85% alcohol by volume. It is then diluted to the resulting 40% vol. Aging: a mixture of rums, where some components are aged up to 20 years. The rum is hand-blended in small volumes, non-chill filtered, and no caramel is added for color.
A. H. Riise Royal Danish Navy is a dark, distinctly sweet, full and complex rum. It evokes old Caribbean warehouses, the sea and rum for sailors - but in a modern, refined way.
