The Famous Grouse whisky house is one of the most important names in blended Scotch whisky and represents a combination of tradition, consistency and commercial strength of a brand that has built an extraordinary position not only in the United Kingdom, but also in world markets. The brand was created in the late 19th century, when it was launched on the market in 1896 by Matthew Gloag & Son. Originally called Grouse Brand, its symbol was the red grouse, a traditional Scottish bird and national game. It was the strong visual identity and emphasis on the quality of the blend that led to the brand acquiring the adjective "The Famous", which became its official part.
From a technological point of view, the success of The Famous Grouse is based on the precise art of blending. The basis is malt whiskies from renowned distilleries, among them in particular the production from The Glenturret Distillery, which is considered one of the oldest operating distilleries in Scotland. These malt components are supplemented with high-quality grain whiskies, while the resulting mixture is unified and left to rest so that the flavors harmonize. The typical flavor profile of the basic variant of The Famous Grouse is built on tones of dried fruit, caramel, fine spices, light smokiness and a hint of oak wood. The character is balanced, round and accessible, which makes the whiskey suitable for both individual consumption and classic mixed drinks.
Commercially, The Famous Grouse has long been one of the best-selling whiskeys in Scotland and is steadily holding its own among the key export brands. In addition to the basic variant, the portfolio also includes editions such as Smoky Black (formerly Black Grouse), which accentuates the peaty character, or older maturation with a higher proportion of sherry casks. The brand is now part of the portfolio of The Edrington Group, which also owns other major Scottish brands.
