HINE – a tradition of British precision in French Cognac

The Hine cognac house is one of the most respected and at the same time the most “classic” producers in the Cognac region. It was founded in 1763 in the town of Jarnac and from the beginning has built a reputation as a producer of elegant, precisely blended cognacs with an emphasis on finesse and purity of expression. Its strong British footprint is interesting – a key figure in the history of the house was Thomas Hine, an Englishman who settled in France in the 18th century and gave the brand a character combining French terroir and a British sense of structure and consistency.

Hine has long focused primarily on the crus Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne, the most prestigious areas of the Cognac region, known for producing distillates with high aging potential. The basis is the Ugni Blanc variety, which provides a light, acid-supported wine suitable for distillation. Distillation is traditionally carried out in copper kettles of the Charentais type and subsequent aging in carefully selected French oak barrels allows for the gradual development of aromatic complexity.

A typical feature of the Hine style is the emphasis on elegance over robustness. The brand's cognacs are not built on heavy woodiness or excessive sweetness, but on delicate structure, harmony and balance. The result is spirits with a clean aromatic profile, often with notes of white fruit, flowers, fine spices, vanilla and a light oak accent.

Thomas Hine, originally from England, was briefly interned in France during the Napoleonic Wars, where he subsequently married into a local merchant family and took over the business. His name became synonymous with quality and exports to Great Britain, which was a key market. This English connection is still evident in the brand's overall image - sober, conservative and dignified. During the 19th and 20th centuries, Hine consolidated its position among the producers of premium cognacs. The range includes both VSOP categories and highly prized older blends and vintage cognacs, which are rather exceptional within the region. The vintage editions are among the unique elements of the portfolio and demonstrate the house's long-term focus on archiving and quality control of individual harvests.

Unlike mass-market brands, Hine maintains a relatively small production and emphasis on selective distribution. It is appreciated by connoisseurs who seek a more subtle, sophisticated style without ostentation. Hine cognacs are described as clean, precise, with a balanced ratio of fruitiness, spice and oak maturation.
